Spyware programs have begun borrowing techniques from another very malicious type of program, known as a "rootkit." Rootkits give remote attackers administrative access to machines that they manage to infect. With a rootkit, attackers can peruse compromised machines' hard drive's, set up or change user accounts, add, delete, or modify files, and communicate with other machines on a network or the Internet.
